It’s impossible not to when you are within 10 feet or so of this giant life-sized chocolate Santa display at the Walt Disney World Swan Hotel. The display has been happening since 2010 and includes a 7-foot tall, 400-pound nutcracker. As we keep going around Crescent Lake, we get to Disney’s BoardWalk Inn where their display is shore to impress from Nov. 17 through Dec. 27.

Per Walt Disney World, the rationale was that all holiday offerings that “draw big crowds will be on hiatus” due to physical distancing. If you’re visiting Walt Disney World during the holiday season, a visit to the Grand Floridian is something we consider a requirement. This year, the Grand Floridian’s gingerbread house returned to its original style with red accents. For the last two years, the gingerbread house was accented with decor representing Disney’s 50th anniversary. In 2017, a 46-inch-wide gingerbread display mirrored the resort itself—complete with a pool and a teepee. After viewing the resort-within-the-resort, guests could treat themselves to seasonal spa treatments, including the Arctic Berry Peel and Sugar Plum Restorative Oxygen Ritual.
What We Wish We’d Known Before Going to Disney World During the Holidays
A visit to the Grand Floridian is a quintessential holiday-time experience, and it’s one of a few must-do stops on our Free Self-Guided Walt Disney World Yuletide Resort Tour. That’s what we recommend doing in the morning before attending Disney Very Merriest After Hours (if you opt to do that upcharge) or perhaps just on your non-parks day. It’s one of our favorite things to do at Walt Disney World, and we make a point of doing it annually–along with separate visits to many of the hotels. Anyway, on the backside of the gingerbread display, we see the menu for the 2022 gingerbread house at the Grand Floridian.
Four Seasons Rancho Encantado
Every year, the gingerbread house at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort resembles a Victorian-style house and is located in the main lobby of the resort. Guests will be able to purchase gingerbread treats and other sweets from the gingerbread house when it opens in November. Each year, Disney’s Boardwalk Resort creates a breathtaking life-sized gingerbread display that rivals the Grand Floridian gingerbread house in scale and detail. This carousel actually turns, and each year the horses have a new theme that follows a set of Disney characters and films.

Additional cut-outs in the shape of hearts reveal hidden ornaments. We also love exploring the little scenes and characters set up throughout the display, like this doorway with a snowman and toy soldier greeter. There are so many holiday traditions that we all love and cherish, and Disney has a unique way of putting its own special twist on those traditions. A display is set up on the first and second floors, offering a preview of the treats.

The gingerbread house display will officially open on November 8, 2023, and will remain open through January 1, 2024. For holiday lovers, stopping by the Grand Floridian during the holiday season is truly a must-do. Guests can also view the unique gingerbread display inside Haunted Mansion Holiday. Haunted Mansion Holiday will be available through January 7, 2024. The TV mounted on the side of the gingerbread house usually plays video about its construction. There are tiny trees staged on tables next to the gingerbread house.

Built from scratch, Disney chefs and a construction team assemble the house piece by piece as resort guests diligently check on the progress. The project was delayed and then officially pushed to 2024 so as not to interfere with the gingerbread house display. But you'd need a truckload of candy to deck these adorable abodes, for several of LA's gingerbread houses stand at two stories or more. A lift vehicle nearby was likely used to add shingles to the very top of the gingerbread house. Most, if not all, of the house’s gingerbread shingles and siding pieces have been installed.

It may be just a few days into November, but the most magical place on Earth is already preparing for Santa with lots of treats and good cheer. If you’re traveling by bus, monorail, boat, etc., you’re perfectly fine. Again, we’d strongly recommend taking the walking path from Magic Kingdom to Grand Floridian that opened around this time last year.
Chocolate Santas, snowmen, and nutcrackers are alongside miniature snow covered trees. The Victorian-style house has gabled roofs, dentils, decorative scrollwork, shutters, and more. Many of the decorations have EARidescent shades of blue and gold. Even the gold ribbon wraps found on the turrets of Cinderella Castle are on the home’s chimney stack.
